Wedding speeches and toasts guide

Whether you're the best man terrified of the microphone, the father of the bride who's been rewriting the same paragraph for three months, or the groom wondering if "thanks everyone" is enough, a great wedding speech is simpler than you think. It needs to be personal, genuine, and brief. Here's everything you need to know, from who speaks and when, to how to actually write and deliver something that lands.

Who Speaks at a South African Wedding?

The traditional South African wedding speech order typically goes like this:

The MC (Master of Ceremonies) — Opens the reception, introduces each speaker, and keeps the programme flowing throughout the evening
Father of the Bride (or a family representative) — Often the first major speech; welcomes the guests and toasts the couple
The Groom — Thanks both families, the bridal party, and guests; closes with a toast to his bride
The Best Man — Usually the most anticipated speech of the evening; tells stories about the groom and toasts the couple
The Bride (optional, but increasingly common) — A personal word of thanks and a toast
The Maid of Honour (optional) — Celebrates the bride and toasts the couple

Not every wedding follows this order exactly, and not every role needs to speak. The old assumption that only men give speeches has faded considerably; plenty of modern weddings feature the bride speaking in her own right, alongside or instead of a best man's toast. Work with your MC to decide which speeches suit the flow of your day, and don't feel obliged to include a role just because tradition says so.

How Long Should Each Speech Be?

The golden rule: leave them wanting more.

MC introductions: 1–2 minutes each
Father of the Bride: 4–7 minutes
Groom: 3–5 minutes
Best Man: 5–8 minutes
Bride / Maid of Honour: 3–5 minutes each

A 10-minute speech feels very long to a room full of people who've been celebrating all day. Time yourself when you rehearse. Most people speak faster when nervous, so aim slightly longer in rehearsal than you want on the day, and read the room if you're going off-script; guests fidgeting and glancing at their phones is your cue to wrap up the next thought and land the toast.

What Makes a Great Wedding Speech?

Every memorable wedding speech has three things:

A personal story. Not a list of facts about the person, a real, specific moment that shows who they are. "I remember when..." beats "She has always been..." every time.
Genuine emotion. You don't need to cry, but you do need to mean it. The room can always tell the difference.
A clear toast. Know exactly how you're going to end. A crisp, confident toast lands beautifully; a mumbled, wandering ending doesn't.

A Simple Structure You Can Actually Use

If a blank page is the hardest part, borrow this structure and fill in your own material:

Open with who you are and your connection. One sentence. "For those who don't know me, I'm Sipho, [Name]'s brother and, as of an hour ago, apparently his best man for real this time."
Tell one story that shows character. Pick a specific memory that reveals something true and warm about the person, not just that they're "a great guy" or "the best friend anyone could ask for."
Pivot to the couple together. A short observation about how they are as a pair, something you've noticed change since they met, or a moment you witnessed that told you this was serious.
A line of genuine advice or well-wishing. Keep it short and sincere rather than a list of marriage clichés.
The toast. A clear, confident closing line that tells the room exactly when to raise their glasses.

This structure works whether you're the best man, a parent, or the bride herself; only the content and tone shift.

Tips for Every Speaker

Write it out in full first

Even if you plan to speak from bullet points on the day, writing the whole speech out first helps you find the structure, spot the weak bits, and cut what doesn't earn its place. Then condense to key phrases for the actual delivery.

Practise out loud, not just in your head

Reading it silently is not the same as saying it out loud. Practise in front of a mirror, your partner, or a trusted friend, and watch their face when you hit the funny or heartfelt parts. If they're not responding the way you hoped, now is the time to adjust.

Speak slowly

Adrenaline will make you rush. Deliberately slow down, especially at the start, and after a punchline or an emotional moment. Pause. Let the room respond. Silence feels longer to you than it does to them.

Go easy on the alcohol before you speak

One drink to settle the nerves is fine. Four drinks to "loosen up" is a story you'll hear about for years.

Make eye contact

Look at the couple when you're talking about them. Look around the room at other moments. Don't stare at your notes the whole time; use them as a safety net, not a script.

Use cards, not your phone

Printed cards or small notes are easier to hold steady than a phone. They also don't go dark on you mid-speech, and they look more considered.

If English isn't the room's only language

Many South African weddings have guests spanning several home languages. If that's true for yours, a short greeting or a single well-chosen phrase in another language relevant to the family can land beautifully and shows real thought, but keep the bulk of the speech in whichever language most of the room shares, so nobody feels left out of the story you're telling.

What to Avoid

Embarrassing stories — What seems funny to you might not be funny to the couple's parents, grandparents, colleagues, or new in-laws sitting in the room
Mentioning ex-partners — Even as a joke. Just don't.
Inside jokes that only a handful of people understand — The whole room should be able to follow along
Going over time — If you've been given 5 minutes, take 5 minutes. Not 12.
A rambling ending — Know exactly where you're closing, and close there. End on the toast.
Reading verbatim from your phone — It looks like you couldn't be bothered to prepare

Toast Formats That Work

A toast doesn't need to be clever, it needs to be sincere. Here are three formats that always land well:

Simple and direct: "Please raise your glasses to [Name] and [Name], may your love grow stronger with every year."
With a quote: "As someone once said, 'A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.' I can already see that's exactly what these two will do. To [Name] and [Name]."
Personal and specific: "I've known [Name] for 15 years, and I've never seen them happier than they are today. To the couple, may you always bring out the best in each other. Ladies and gentlemen, [Name] and [Name]."

Notes for the Bride and Maid of Honour

Speeches from the bride's side of the wedding party have their own texture, often warmer and less joke-driven than a best man's roast, though there's no rule saying it has to be that way. If you're the bride speaking, focus on thanking the people who got you to this day (parents, the groom's family, whoever helped plan the wedding) and one honest reflection on your partner rather than a highlight reel of the relationship. If you're the maid of honour, the same personal-story structure applies as it does for a best man; pick one memory that actually shows who the bride is, rather than reaching for generic warmth like "she's always been there for me." Specific beats general every time, regardless of who's holding the microphone.

What If You've Been Asked to Speak Last-Minute?

It happens more than you'd think, someone drops out, or a couple decides midway through planning that they'd love one more voice in the lineup. If you're handed the microphone with only a few days' notice, don't try to write something as polished as speakers who've had months. Pick one honest, specific story, keep it under three minutes, and end with a clear toast. Short and sincere beats long and rushed every time, and nobody in the room is grading you against a speech you didn't have time to prepare.

Handling Nerves on the Day

Almost everyone giving a wedding speech feels some version of dread beforehand, even confident public speakers. A few things genuinely help: eat something beforehand so you're not speaking on an empty, nervous stomach, do a final run-through alone a couple of hours before rather than right before you're called up, and have a glass of water within reach at the microphone. If your hands shake holding cards, that's normal and invisible to most of the room even when it feels enormous to you. Focus on one friendly face in the crowd if eye contact with the whole room feels like too much, and remember that everyone present wants you to succeed. Nobody at a wedding is hoping the speeches go badly.
