7 Tips to survive your wedding shoot

Your wedding day (usually) only happens once and with everything to run around and sort out, you would think hiring a professional photographer means great wedding photographs are one less thing to worry about.

Your wedding day is going to bring a lot of mixed emotions and if you have never experience a photo shoot before, it can be quite daunting.  For great photos you need to be relaxed, confident and happy otherwise you won’t enjoy the results.

Here are our 7 key tips on how to survive and get great photos from you wedding day. As the boy-scouts say, always be prepared!

  1. Know your style. There are many different types of photography and knowing what you like will ensure you aren’t disappointed with your photos.  Spend a long time looking at the different styles of photographers before choosing one you like.  Consider everything: do you like candid shots? More formal portraits?  Do you prefer black & white?  Do you want a traditional feel?  Knowing what you want will make it easier to choose a photographer that is right for you.
  2. Feel comfortable with your photographer. Meeting the photographer in advance is a must.  If you can meet them at the location and spend time going through a photo shot list together.  You don’t have to stick to the shot list on the day but having a solid direction on what shots you want will save time wasting and any added stress or confusion.  Knowing what you are going to be doing gives you confidence and it will come through in the photos.
  3. Bring props.  Having props with you is essential.  Go through some ‘fun’ ideas with the photographer in advance and make a note to bring a blanket if you are doing scenes outdoors to keep your dress clean.  Bringing a change of shoes for different height in the photos can also be useful.  You can ask the photographer to bring along props like hats, parasols, balloons etc. Anything that you feel will bring an element of fun into your photos.  You don’t have to use the images, but having a few silly photos taken will make you laugh and get rid of any nerves.
  4. Don’t do anything you don’t want to. It’s your wedding and these photos are going to be your memories.  If the photographer is asking you to get into awkward poses or is making you feel uncomfortable, feel free to take control.  You are paying him to photograph your day and the photos must be what you want.
  5. Bring some music. If your shoot is going to be away from the main party then bring some music with you.  Portable players are easy to come by and it will liven up the atmosphere and break any awkward silences.  Music makes everyone feel naturally relaxed and can help you create an atmosphere that suits the photos you want.
  6. Make sure you have enough time.  Photographers should be able to help you work out how much time you will need to get all of your shots together.  Planning the photos into the order of the day will smooth out the process a lot.  Being rushed can affect how you are feeling and that will show in your face.  Remember the day only happens once and the photos will last a lifetime!
  7. Do your family photos first. If you are having family or guest photos do them first.  Everyone will still be looking nice and will be more accommodating straight after the ceremony.  If you leave them to mingle chances are someone will be drunk, the kids will be messy and your photos won’t be as formal (if this is what you are going for!).  It is also important to keep a short list of family photos that you want taken.  As longs as you have the main combinations, there will be plenty of candid shots that will be much more precious.
