Romantic Poems Part VI

The Wedding Directory’s collection of romantic poems continued…

A Charm Invests a Face

A charm invests a face
Imperfectly beheld.
The lady dare not lift her veil
For fear it be dispelled.

But peers beyond her mesh,
And wishes, and denies,
Lest interview annul a want
That image satisfies.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), American poet. This short, simple, beautiful poem is a statement on the fragility of beauty.

Love is Enough

Love is enough: though the world be a-waning,
And the woods have no voice but the voice of complaining,
Though the skies be too dark for dim eyes to discover
The gold-cups and daisies fair blooming thereunder,
Though the hills be held shadows, and the sea a dark wonder,
And this day draw a veil over all deeds passed over,
Yet their hands shall not tremble, their feet shall not falter:
The void shall not weary, the fear shall not alter
These lips and these eyes of the loved and the lover.

William Morris (1834-1896), English textile designer, artist and writer. In this poem, Morris reminds us that, simply, love is enough to overcome all challenges.

It’s All I Have to Bring Today

It’s all I have to bring today -
This, and my heart beside -
This, and my heart, and all the fields -
And all the meadows wide -
Be sure you count – should I forget
Some one the sum could tell -
This, and my heart, and all the Bees
Which in the Clover dwell.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), American poet. It’s all I Have to Bring Today perfectly conveys the message of love a bride and groom bring with them on their wedding day.

My Heart to You is Given

My heart to you is given:
Oh, do give yours to me;
We’ll lock them up together,
And throw away the key.

Frederick Saunders

Wonder

Wonder,
A garden among the flames!

My heart can take on any form:
A meadow for gazelles,
A cloister for monks,
For the idols, sacred ground,
Ka’ba for the circling pilgrim,
The tables of the Torah,
The scrolls of the Quran.

My creed is Love;
Wherever its caravan turns along the way,
That is my belief,
My faith.

Ibn Arabi (1165-1240), Andalusian Arab Sufi mystic and philosopher
